Track of the Day: Tasman Keith and Stevie Jean “Prey” (2019)

Our Track of the Day is “Prey”, a pulsating song from a new collaboration between Sydney-based rapper Tasman Keith and Stevie Jean who hails from the Northern Territory. These are two exciting young artists in their own rights, and they have teamed up to put together an EP, the first track of which is “Prey”. This song explores what happens next after two people get together for one night. It’s a track with a fantastic hypnotic beat, an urgent message, and it really does deliver in spades. I’m intrigued to know what the rest of the EP will sound like.

The track was mixed by Neal H Pogue, who has worked with Janelle Monae, Common, Stevie Wonder, just to name a few.

As with so much of the music coming out of the Northern Territory these days, Skinnyfish Music has had a hand in this one. It was born out of a meeting in their new Studio G, named after the legendary Skinnyfish artist Gurrumul.

Prey was a quick process with producer Papertoy following Stevie Jean and Tasman Keith’s creative conversation. “I started making the beat in the studio and Tas and Stevie were writing at the same time, and I could hear what they were talking about, I Just kept pushing the direction of the beat to align with them. It was all a really immediate type of process,” said Papertoy.

Tasman has a Facebook page, and you can also follow Stevie on her Facebook page.

Tasman will be performing at the Barunga Festival, 7th-9th June. Buy tickets HERE.
