Track of the Day: Midas.Gold “Passions” (2018)

With a scorching sound that’ll inevitably burn through to numerous “best of” lists come New Years, Brisbane-based emcee Midas.Gold gets deeply experimental on “Passions”. The new track, released earlier this month and recently given the visual treatment, is a strong (2-)step towards fusing UK’s definitive Garage vibes with Midas’ frenetic performance, offering something vastly different to his previous singles and proving his range in a big way.

It comes as no surprise that “Passions” is already running rings around national radio and the internet hype machine, standing confidently in its own lane but sitting amongst the numerous high quality cuts coming from Australia’s hip hop scene this year. The beat was crafted by producer James Angus, inching slowly towards a breezy dubstep finale as Midas confidently raps that he has the “passion of Christ” and is out to grab his piece of the pie, of which he most certainly will with a fiery triplet flow that matches the beat’s party-ready bounce.

The track’s music video, handled by internationally acclaimed Melbourne filmmaker Hoodwolf Harris, matches Midas’ intensity, examining hypocrisy and rage through the scope of religion. Check it out below, and be sure to watch out as “Passions” pops up on all the relevant streaming playlists. It’s a certified hit, so get in early.
