Track of the Day: Kaurna Cronin “Gotta Get Outta This Place” (2019)

Last week saw Folk troubadour Kaura Cronin release his emotive new single “Gotta Get Outta This Place”, a song all about longing for the road and desiring to be flung outside of ones’ comfort zone. Cronin, himself, is no stranger to an itinerant life on the road, having performed over four hundred shows across the UK and Europe.

With it’s titular nod to The Animals, and songwriting the likes of Paul Kelly and The Go Betweens would be proud of, “Gotta Get Outta This Place” moves beautifully from the stark folk vibes of the song’s opening moments toward a percussive jam vibe, with some delightful guitar work and gentle harmonies all featuring in the mix. There’s a lot to love here, but for me it’s Cronin’s vocal that really gives the track that little bit of an extra kick. Brilliant stuff!

Talking about the inspiration behind the track, Cronin said:

“This song is one I’ve been wanting to write for a long time but had never really managed to get the tone quite right.  It’s a song about internal battles of a sense of belonging and love for the idea of ‘ones home’ and the ongoing feeling of needing to get away from home to experience the unknown to be inspired by different places, people and ideas.  It was important for me to try and capture the sense of passion and inspiration in one’s home and not dismiss that – it’s about the conflict of urges that one can associate with not wanting to feel ‘comfort’ anymore.”

Cronin is back in the country to perform a run of exclusive shows to celebrate the single’s release, with the tour kicking off tonight at The Toff in Town in Melbourne, moving through Sydney, and wrapping up at Chateau Apollo in Adelaide on June 14.
