Watch Jim Carrey fight Sonic the Hedgehog in 2019’s strangest film trailer

It’s 2019, and we’re about to witness not only a live-action Pokémon movie, but a legitimate big-budget ($90 mil) film depicting the adventures of Sega’s most recognisable mascot, Sonic.

That’s right, lightning-fast, anthropomorphic hero Sonic the Hedgehog is getting his own CGI-rich feature film despite no recent Sonic title really making an impact on the gaming world. What’s even stranger is that the official trailer, released today, makes this upcoming project look less like a dedicated Sonic the Hedgehog feature and more like a loud and excessive Jim Carrey comedy.

At least it looks like an entertaining one, as Jeff Fowler makes his theatrical directorial debut.

The veteran actor will be playing evil super villain Dr. Robotnik without his typical egg-shaped appearance, while Parks & Recreation funny man Ben Schwartz (Jean-Ralphio) voices Sonic. James Marsden also joins the cast as a member of the San Fran PD on the blue blur’s trail due a mysterious surge of high-speed energy across the city.

There is no official word – or visuals – on whether or not this film will feature beloved Sonic side-pieces Miles “Tails” Prower and Knuckles the Echidna, but there has been a few casting leaks with undisclosed roles. Let’s hope for the best?

Sonic the Hedgehog will hit theatres November 2019.
