Over the last few years, Melbournians have increasingly utilised the Lower Yarra River as a major social and gastronomic hub. And if the popularity of venues like the Arbory Afloat and Supafish are anything to go by, the idea of floating on the iconic river is forever appealing to the masses. If only you could be the captain of your own floating eatery…
Originating from Copenhagen, GoBoat has been in service on Canberra’s Lake Burley Griffin for the past 12 months with great success. And with the Lower Yarra River increasing in popularity, it was only fitting for the novel service to launch in Melbourne.
Aside from the freedom of operating your own aquatic vessel without a boat licence, sustainability is the key selling point of GoBoat Melbourne. Designed and built in Denmark, each of the 5.5 m long boats are made of fiberglass sourced from recycled PET bottles. And the centred wooden picnic tables inside the boats are also made from recycled materials. Furthermore, the boats don’t emit any pollution into the water, as they are powered by silent electric motors.
With a maximum capacity of 8 people per boat, a dog friendly policy, and a reasonable alcohol limitation onboard, GoBoat Melbourne makes for a perfect laid back afternoon eating and drinking on the river for those seeking to channel their inner maritime explorer.
Just remember to bring sunscreen.
