DJI announces the rugged Osmo Action camera, dual screens, 4K/60fps @ 100Mbps

In a surprise (and welcome) announcement DJI, the company typically behind civilian drones, have released a bold and refreshing take on the portable, handheld action camera.

The Osmo Action camera immediately looks like it can take many hard hits, drops and falls. DJI boasts the camera is made for adventurers as the body is constructed to handle extreme sub-freezing conditions with its waterproof, disproof and shockproof frame. The Osmo Action has two screens on the rear and front to make sure every scene – from selfies to vlogging to POV are perfectly framed. The 2.25-inch rear touchscreen is covered in a water and fingerprint repellent coating. The screens have a brightness of 750-nits to ensure they can be viewed even in direct sunlight.

In short, 12-megapixel photos and 4K video up to 60fps is recorded through a 1/2.3-inch sensor with the Osmo Action recording 4K 60fps at 100Mbps. The camera incorporates a three-glass aspherical lens design with the promise of low-distortion and warping and two layers of anti-fingerprint and anti-reflective coating will help further ensure your shots are clean and crisp.

“DJI has always pushed the limits of technology, and the content creators who love our products made clear they wanted us to push the limits of their creative potential too. Osmo Action is our cutting-edge answer to what the creative community demands. Exceptional image quality and stabilization in a unique and durable new form factor, with dual colour screens and seamless software integration. For all types of creators who push their gear to the limits, Osmo Action sets the new standard,” said Roger Luo, DJI President.

The camera uses DJI’s RockSteady Electronic Image Stabilisation technology. When it comes to battery life, the Osmo Action has a removable battery that is capable of recording for 93 minutes at 4K/30fps without RockSteady, and 135 minutes of recording at 1080p/30fps without RockSteady.

In perhaps the biggest and most essential move to make the Osmo Action an immediate competitor to other leading action cameras, DJI have unveiled an extensive range of accessories for all situations and desires. From curved and flat adhesive mounts for skateboards, bikes, helmets to a waterproof case that’ll allow you to dive 60 meters down, a 3.5mm adapter for external mic recording, extension and floating handles as well as a range of Neutral Density, Polarizer and underwater filters – every possible accessory seems ready to go for the consumer.

The DJI Osmo Action retails for $499AUD and is available for purchase now HERE. It will be available at DJI authorised dealers in June. To find out more information on the camera, you can head HERE.
