Canon announces their lightest, most affordable full-frame mirrorless camera to date

Off the back of the EOS R System release last September, Canon has today announced their lightest and most affordable full-frame mirrorless interchangeable lens camera to date. The EOS RP announcement has also been coupled with the news that Canon has developed six new RF lenses for release this year, including the dynamic RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM.

The EOS RP has a 26.2 Megapixel full frame CMOS sensor and is paired with Canon’s latest DIGIC 8 processor. Optimised for low-light conditions, the RP’s ISO 40,000, expandable to ISO 102,400, works alongside the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system that allows photographers to capture images in dark environments as low as -5EV. The 485g body also boasts a Dual Sensing IS system that reduces camera shake and blur, as well as silent shooting mode.

The RP features Canon’s fastest autofocus ever thanks to the aforementioned Dual Pixel CMOS AF system with autofocus speed as fast as 0.05 seconds with up to 4779 selectable AF positions. Just like the EOS R, the RP will also feature an electronic viewfinder with 2.36 million dots that covers 100 per cent of the scene and files can be shared directly to devices via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capabilities.

The EOS RP (body only) is listed at $2,099AUD, with the now 5-month old EOS R (body only) priced at $3,349AUD.

In news that will make videographers happy, the EOS RP features a microphone and headphone jack to help capture and monitor audio. As well as capturing 4K resolution at 25fps and Full HD at 60fps, users will also be able to experience modes such as 4K time-lapse, interval timer, HDR movies as well as slow-motion. Movie Digital IS is a 5-axis stabilisation with will improve handheld shake.

RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM

A further six full-frame RF mount lenses have also been announced which means a total of 10 will be released by the end of 2019. Canon enthusiasts can expectthe release of the RF 85mm F1.2L USM, RF 85mm F1.5L USM DS (Defocus Smoothing for bokeh effect portraits), RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM, RF 15-35mm F2.8L IS USM, RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM and the RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM.
