Track of the Day: Wye Oak “Evergreen” (2019)

Though they’ve morphed their sound over the years, stripped away some of the moody atmospheres and shrunken to crisp, intimate pieces at times, Wye Oak haven’t forgotten how to world build. Teaming up to give Adult Swim Singles an irresistible reminder of some of their older material, Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack have come through with “Evergreen”, whipping up an emotional landscape that should easily satisfy fans of older albums like Civilian and The Knot.

Bringing things back down to earth for this one, the expressive and melancholic indie rock piece has been described by the band themselves as a “sonic documentation of seasonal depression”. Swamped in heady horns and ascending guitar licks, Wasner gives one heck of a performance as she sings about the struggles of a restless mind, spinning around in a psychedelic soundscape that brings up images of lush forestry and days spent hiking to nowhere.
