Track of the Day: Wanderers “What I Do” (2018)

The new single “What I Do” from Adelaide duo Wanderers is the perfect track to ring in summer. Dusty Lee Stephensen and Matt Birkin outshine themselves on this upbeat jam, which started life as merely a looped groove to practice bass to. Now, fleshed out and with a good dose of Motown influence, it adds a fresh twist to soul music.

Formerly known as the Wasted Wanderers, the duo have matured and honed their own unique sound – a fusion of 70’s influenced soul with funk elements. 2018 has proven to be their biggest year to date, with sold out shows in their hometown as well as performances at several music festivals, such as the Bellow Winter Music Festival and more recently at Mullum Music Festival.

Following on from the release of “Off My Back” earlier this year, which was featured on many Spotify playlists, “What I Do” has already been well received by fans. Its dynamic shifts in melody and the use of old-school synth techniques create an intriguing mix of the traditional and contemporary. Stephensen’s voice reaches the highest pitches in true Curtis Mayfield manner and the funky guitar tunes form the single’s groove. It has a real feel of effortlessness to it, which might be a side effect of its spontaneous development on and off stage, and runs smoothly through the catchy chorus and verses. Wanderers have composed another irresistible genre-defying gem here, with driving beats and skilfully layered tunes drawing from funk, soul and pop influences.
