Track of the Day: Moaning Lisa “Lily” (2018)

Following on from the release of their much anticipated sophomore EP Do You Know Enough? Canberra alt-rockers Moaning Lisa have dropped a new music video for “Lily”. What better way to get us all excited for their upcoming tour?

Formed in 2016, Moaning Lisa have done pretty well for themselves in their burgeoning career, earning themselves some NLMA nominations, not to mention the attention of the likes of Triple J and FBi thanks to their debut EP The Sweetest. The band are known for putting on a good live show, winning the National Campus Band Competition back in 2016, and more recently sharing the stage with Camp CopeAli BarterBall Park Music and more. They don’t seem to be slowing down any either, with their new EP getting plenty of praise and support.

“Lily” is a rock ballad that is guaranteed to tug at the heartstrings, with some stunning vocals and a particularly emotive guitar tone. The music video, filmed by William He in Canberra, proves to be the perfect accompaniment to the song’s fuzzed-out atmospherics, and encapsulates all too well that post-breakup heartbreak. There’s a naturalism to the video which I really like too, one which extends right down to the fun little details: a Wifi password pinned to the fridge, or the Patricia Piccinni “Skywhale” postcard stuck to the kitchen wall. Sure, they probably don’t mean anything, but they might? and at the very least they add character.

Do You Know Enough? is available now though Hysterical Records in Australia and Father/Daughter Records in the USA. You can catch Moaning Lisa on the road up and down the East Coast next month (tour dates below). Be sure to check the band a like on Facebook too.
