Track of the Day: Eliza Hull “Going Soon” (2018)

“Going Soon” is the final single off of Eliza Hull’s recently released EP – How We Disappeared. Known for her huge swirling soundscapes and harrowing vocals, Hull brings a more rhythmic twist to her indie-folk sound in “Going Soon.”

Enchanting and textured Eliza’s voice aims straight for the heart in the same way that Lana Del Rey, Angus and Julia Stone and Florence and The Machine overwhelm us with their beauty. Less warped and intense than the rest of the EP, “Going Soon” is a fresh and sweet mix of nostalgia and introspection.  She explains: “it’s about moving on from elements of the part, and being apprehensive of the change that comes with that,” it’s a story that perfectly suits the final single of the album.

The EP was produced by Jono Steer, who has a wealth of experience producing for similar artists such as Angie McMahon and Gretta Ray. This could be explanation for the more contemporary and arguably more commercial feel of the track. Though he balances this without losing the classic beauty of her voice and songwriting.

Despite her strong and versatile voice she never “over sings.” Each song has a natural build which contrasts the melancholy she develops with hope and strength. Eliza Hull has crafted a sleek and elegant track and the layered intensity of How We Disappeared is bound to be a captivating and alluring in a live setting. Luckily, we won’t have to wait too long to find out, she is taking this single and the whole EP on her “Going Soon” tour this November with Julia Johnson by her side.
