Coinciding with the announcement that the Perth artist has signed with the Dot Dash Recordings roster, Carla Geneve has released her new single “2001”.
The single takes its name from Stanley Kubrick’s iconic film 2001: A Space Odyssey and makes reference to science fiction writer Jack Vance and John Carpenter’s 1982 film The Thing. According to Geneve, “2001 is about escapism through old movies and books that I loved as a kid. Those paired with songwriting serve as the best form of catharsis for me.”
“2001” is a real beauty of a track, boasting more of Geneve’s now trademark relatable lyricism. Initially its a stripped back affair, with just a slowly strummed guitar, and then percussion, offering the only accompaniment to Geneve’s vocals. As the song progresses, and builds, there is a shift from a sense of vulnerability to a feeling of strength and confidence, with Geneve’s vocals displaying some real bite come the song’s conclusion. It’s pretty clear to see why Geneve is considered one of Australia’s most exciting up and coming talents.
With already substantial support back at home in Perth, where she secured seven nominations at the 2018 WAM Awards, love from Triple J, and with a debut EP on the way later this year, it seems inevitable that 2019 will prove to be a big year for Carla Geneve.
“2001” is available now. In support of the new single Carla has announced a national headline tour, dates below. If you can’t make it to one of the shows you can keep up to date via Carla’s Facebook and Instagram.
