Track by Track: Gold Coast rockers Radolescent take us through their debut album Prehab

Last week saw Gold Coast larrikins and punk rockers, Radolescent drop their debut album, Prehab. Recorded at Queensland’s Blind Boy Studios, with Mark Duckworth and Brad Hoskings on production duties, the album has the band reflecting on everything from drug culture to mental health issues on the Gold Coast.

It’s an album that explores, and showcases the grittier aspects of the area: the filthy parties, scary backstreets and unsavoury characters. Or, in the words of guitarist and vocalist, Isaac Atkinson, “Prehab is an album written about the days spent on our beaches, nights partying and some social issues that we feel strongly about”.

To celebrate the album’s release, the band have put together this track-by-track to take you through Prehab’s ten tracks. Sit back, hit play, raise a tinny and let the band bring the sound of the Gold Coast to you…

Retina

The opening track on the album describes the social media scene on the Gold Coast, a place where beauty is rewarded over brains and hard work. With over half of the country’s influencers living on our shores it is something we come in contact with on a daily basis, whether it be sitting on Burleigh Hill amongst a dozen photo shoots, or at a local bar where you get skipped in the queue for a more known socialite.

The Other Side

Our favourite beach break on the coast has been under the threat of corporate development for the past ten years. The Coast’s local mayor has had multiple tries at bringing in new development and the locals are sick of it. This song represents a movement by locals, to SAVE OUR SPIT.

406

A track about the internal struggles faced during my teen years, trying to figure out who, what and where I wanted to be when I grew up.

Locked Up

When we were teenagers with next to no money we would go out and create our own fun. Locked Up describes a few different stories from those years compiled into one fast paced drug and alcohol-fuelled track.

Tuck Me In

A song all about sleep deprived nights and terrors faced with paralysis.

Speed Based

Ever had a speed based pinger before? This song does its best to relate the feeling.

Water Demon

A couple of us travelled across Australia a few years back, surfing the coastlines along SA and WA. I wrote this song in the back of a Landcruiser going across the Nullabore and she made it all the way into the album.

The Ballad Of Lynn Howl

The classic story of being too fucked up on a night out to be able to talk to the attractive person you spot across the bar. Then finding yourself in the corner howling out like a wolf.

Prehab is available now. The band will be heading out on tour later in the month, with dates up and down the East Coast. Until then catch them on Facebook or Instagram.
