Live Review: The Bronx give their adopted home another riot at the Metro Theatre, Sydney (25.10.18)

The Bronx swept into Sydney’s Metro Theatre last night as part of their current Australian tour, which sees them playing in intimate venues across the country.

Melbourne’s High Tension are a welcome addition to any show. Playing songs from their new album Purge, the post-hardcore band showed a deeper, heavier more metallic sound. Though they started to only a small crowd, the team brought it home to a packed house ready to rock n roll.

California’s The Bronx have a solid friendship with Australian crowds. Having toured here religiously for well over a decade, it’s an (almost) annual pilgrimage to our shores in either of their guises as punk’n’rollers, or their Mariachi El Bronx alter-ego. This year sees them in the country for a second time, after sneaking in for Splendour in the Grass, and exactly one year since their last full tour of the country. After sixteen years as a team, the band haven’t lost an ounce of energy, vitality or integrity, with the group still throwing everything into every single one of their live shows.

Opening with Bronx IV’s “The Unholy Hand”, they warmed the crowd up before tearing into new track “Sore Throat” and old favourites “Shitty Future” and “Heart Attack American”. A new addition to the band is former Queens of the Stone Age drummer Joey Castillo, a heavy hitter who brought a huge new dimension to older tracks such as “Knifeman” and “Six Days a Week” as well as their newer, more rock ‘n’ roll numbers.

After an hour of sweat, the band returned for a short/sharp encore of “I Got Chills”, “Stranger Danger” and “History’s Stranglers” before bidding us all farewell, for another year.

How can you not give The Bronx…
