Album Review: Psychedelic Porn Crumpets take you on a trip with And Now For The Whatchamacallit

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets (PPC) walk a delicate line between some of the magnates of their genre, eliciting the Australian sounds of Tame Impala and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, while creating an unshakable reverence to early psychedelic king, Jimi Hendrix. And Now For The Whatchamacallit is a further exploration of this while allowing PPC to tweak their sound a little to make psychedelica their own.

The album quantifies this sound as edging guitar riffs combine with magical dreamy vocals that endlessly shift the airy tones from track to track. These shifts can be seen through the tidal changes of “Hymn For A Droid” and “Native Tongue”. In one there is a rhythmic, almost maddening shredding that you feel through your person as you rollercoaster to it’s finish and yet the other (including it’s lead in track “Fields, Woods, Time”), clamours thoughtfully, evoking the slower more whimsical nature of psychedelica.

Social Candy, one of the group’s album lead up singles released early in the year, still talks to the heart of Psychedelic Porn Crumpets’ sound with thrashing guitar riffs that threaten to escape through the speakers yet, also meld perfectly with lead vocalist Jack McEwan’s flighty vocals. It’s a fun piece, breaking the feathery peace that rolled out of “Native Tongue” and resets the album’s path moving towards the back end of the track list.

“Digital Hunger” is a special taste of instrumentalism from the four piece band. Using only instruments Psychedelic Porn Crumpets easily creates a pleasing digital vision, focusing the rudimental flicker and jut of a rhythmic guitar strum against the warbling higher tones of the leading guitar. It’s a highlight of album and something that isn’t totally unexpected for a group that takes pride in their instrumental ability.

And Now For The Whatchamacallit is perfect hymn for what makes Psychedelic Porn Crumpets such an exciting and ingenius band. While managing to callback the sounds which made High Visceral Pt.1 and High Visceral Pt.2 symbiote albums, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have leapt to create an album with a sound built on consistent inconsistencies that constantly jump, shift and change your perception of their sound and psychedelic style.
