Bethesda celebrates Doom‘s 25th birthday with a commemorative trailer

id Software’s Doom, the progenitor of the first person shooter genre as we know it, turns 25 today. A game that was so uniquely itself that the term First Person Shooter was invented so we could stop called them “Doom clones,” Doom is an indelible component in the gaming landscape. To commemorate the 25 year milestone, the series’ modern owner Bethesda have dropped a special trailer celebrating the gore, gibs, doots and mods of Carmack and Romero’s accidental masterpiece.

A few things to note:

  • John Romero, game designer on the original Doom, is still planning the release of his”megawad” Sigil, an update for the original game. The game will add nine new single- and multiplayer maps to the original game and are intended to be viewed as a continuation in tone and spirit. It will be available for free in February.
  • Aussie composer Mick Gordon’s soundtrack to id’s 2016 series reboot is an absolute ball tearer and will set you straight if you feel like some good, heavy tunes today.
  • The marketing department get a pat on the back for coming up with “Times change, Doom is Eternal,” a tag line that is not only very good but also works in the title of their very expensive upcoming release.
  • If you would like to replay Doom today, we encourage you to try the Brutal Doom mod which makes the whole game world much more interactive and the gibs much juicier.
  • Further, the only cheats you need are IDDQD and IDKFA. You can also use IDCLIP if you get lost (and IDNOCLIP to turn it off again).

Happy birthday, Doom. We still love you after all these years.
